APRA AMCOS has unveiled its national and state songwriting postcode rankings and according to their research, the inner-city Melbourne suburb of Brunswick is home to the highest number of registered songwriters in the country, knocking Northcote off the top spot it has held for over a decade.
The rankings are determined by the number of earning APRA AMCOS songwriters in each postcode. “The data indicates that Melbourne’s inner North has firmed as the national songwriting capital over the last decade,” Andrew Harris, principal analyst at APRA AMCOS said.
“But digging into more recent trends there are emerging signs that the inner West of Melbourne and parts of South East Queensland are songwriting growth spots to look out for in the near future,” he added.
After Northcote in second place, Fitzroy North/Clifton Hill was placed third on the rankings list, followed respectively by Sydney’s Bondi and Newtown/Enmore and Melbourne’s Coburg and Preston. The top 10 is rounded out by Sydney suburbs of Surry Hills/Darlinghurst at number 8 and Marrickville at number 9, while St Kilda has fallen from fourth place to tenth over the decade.
According to the report, Queensland postcodes have been climbing the rankings over the last decade, and Brisbane suburbs West End/South Brisbane/Highgate Hill are the state’s highest entry at 19. Outside the top 50, Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley showed the strongest growth.
Genre-wise, Sydney is the leader when it comes to dance, electronic and world music, while Melbourne wins in the pop, rock and alternative music. Specifically, Melbourne’s inner north postcodes lead both classical and jazz while Northcote has officially taken top country music spot ahead of Tamworth.
Perth suburbs Joondanna/Tuart Hill/Yokine make an appearance in the report in the list of top ten suburbs for metal songwriters, Alice Springs was ranked second for children’s music and the Byron Bay region is the leading area for new age songwriters.
