Boy & Bear Reveal New Single ‘Southern Sun’

Boy & Bear’s 2011 debut, Moonfire, certainly wasn’t short of praise leading the band to win a staggering 5 ARIA awards and a firm place in the hearts and minds of Australian listeners. Now the band have just revealed Southern Sun, the first single from their upcoming album Harlequin Dream.

The single shows the Boy & Bear maturing into a strong songwriting force. It features the kind of simple, catchy and reverberating melody that harks back to a 70s aesthetic when folk rock had serious kudos. For that very reason this new taste of Boy & Bear is being compared to the likes of Fleetwood Mac.

On the new martial guitarist Killian Gavin states:

“Sharing some music from the 70s was a clear decision that we made… What we’ve made feels older and more rounded than the first record. It’s more pop, less folk.”

The fluidity of the track makes song writing seem easy and the tune was reportedly inspired by a sunset during 2013's Falls Festival. Dave Hosking recounted the moment of inspiration as a sudden burst they had to capture immediately:

“Write them down, write them down’ we were shouting at each other. It was like having a blank canvas and we were just tossing things at it.”

Attendees of Splendour In The Grass will probably be some of the first crowds to experience the new material live when Boy And Bear take to the Byron Bay stage in July.
