Bonnaroo Becomes First Solar-Powered Music Festival In The US

Bonnaroo is the kind of festival that has always been head and shoulders above the rest, and the latest move from organisers proves just that. The prominent event has announced that it will be installing solar panels to power the show in an effort to minimise their ecological footprint.

As reported, this is a pretty forward-thinking idea, given that it will be the first festival to do so. The panels are expected to supply about 61,000 kilowatt hours per year, and word is that they have already been put in place.

The idea was backed by Encore Redevelopment and Sustainable Future, LLC, but the cool part is that the entire construction was funded by those who purchased tickets this year, with a percentage of ticket sales going towards environmental sustainability. You did good, ticket holders.

Says festival partner Rich Goodstone of the news, “None of this could have been possible without the immense support of the generous and forward-thinking Bonnaroo community… Their contributions have brought this project to fruition.” Goodstone added, “We work very hard every year to not only create new initiatives that lessen our impact, but also to educate and encourage our fans to take these ideas home with them… It’s gratifying to add the solar array, and we remain committed to joining forces with our community to expand these kinds of projects each year.”

The lineup is yet to be announced, but we can tell you that the gig takes place in Manchester, Tennessee this coming June 13-16.
