Australia Will Have Two Eurovision Entrants This Year, Sort Of

Some Aussies may find themselves conflicted over which country to barrack for at Eurovision 2017, now that The Voice Australia winner Anja Nissen has been picked to rep for her native Denmark at this year’s big song contest.

The 21-year-old smashed nine other finalists in the Danish Melodi Grand Prix on Saturday night, winning a full 64% vote in the finals to bag the coveted Eurovision slot.

And it seems she’s no stranger to piling up the votes, regardless of geography, after taking out Australia’s The Voice in 2014 to bring glory to her then-coach, Black Eyed Peas member will.i.am. Denmark will now be hoping she’ll be able to pull off something similar for them when this year’s sequin-spangled tune championship kicks off in Kiev, Ukraine on May 9th.

Nissen — who was born and raised in Sydney to Danish parents — will be performing her power ballad ‘Where I Am’ (written with Angel Tupai and Michael D’arcy) at the comp, which you can check out here.

“I love Denmark so much, and it is a great honour to be able to sing for Denmark in Eurovision,” Nissen says in a statement.

Meanwhile, Australia’s own Eurovision champion is set to be unveiled in a special ceremony in Melbourne next Tuesday, 7th March.

You can bet your bangles we’ll be bringing you the news as soon as it happens. But in the meantime, the boss of Australia’s Eurovision squad has told us that the team is open to sending “anything”, even DJs, to represent us in Ukraine so right now the identity of our mystery contender is anyone’s guess.
