Aussie Government Tries To Woo Ed Sheeran After He Asks To Become NZ Citizen

Ed Sheeran is one of Australia’s most beloved overseas-hailing sons, but after reports that the British singer-songwriter could be ready to ditch us and move to New Zealand the Australian Government has taken swift action.

UK publication Daily Star recently reported that ‘Aussie Ed’ has spoken candidly about moving to NZ full time.  “I did ask for citizenship and I think we got an email from someone involved with that,” Sheeran reportedly said. “So maybe that’s going to happen. I could be a citizen.”

Today the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Security (DIPB) tweeted at Sheeran, “heard about your NZ citizenship enquiry. You’re better off with citizenship from across the ditch,” and linked to their site explaining pathways to becoming an Aussie citizen.

Sheeran, who famously contributed to the soundtrack for the largely NZ-filmed trilogy The Hobbit, apparently wants to move based on the belief that New Zealand is so far away from the rest of the world that no one would ever bother attacking it.

“I’ve always said that if a world war breaks out, the one place I would go to is New Zealand because no-one is going to be bothered to come that far to invade,” he said.

Sheeran is yet to respond to the tweet, but we’d like to think that’s because he’s already neck-deep in his Australian citizenship application.
