Aphex Twin Has Released His First Video In 17 Years And It’s Directed By A 12 Year Old Skater Kid

Aphex Twin has once again confused/delighted/angered his fans, releasing his first music video in 17 years, only to reveal it was directed by a 12 year old skater/electronica fan from Dublin named Ryan Wyer. Because of course he did.

This is the man who famously lives inside an old bank and drives an armoured and machine gun-mounted scout car.

While some are calling ‘troll’ on Aphex Twin’s Richard D James for using Wyer’s clip, it’s hard to argue that it doesn’t uphold his penchant for creepy videos. You can’t get much creepier than slowed down and wacked out footage of a group of 12 year old kids dancing to drugged out electronica.

Wyer effortlessly executes the shitty, ’90s indie film clip tropes and 4esque crappy digital effects, despite not even being born in the ’90s. He even rocks a Richard D James mask and mimics D James’ trademark spasmodic, sped-up dance style. The kid is next level for his age.

The track itself harks back to the sound of early Aphex Twin releases, yet with some contemporary elements thrown in such as the driving techno bass line. It’s the first single from his forthcoming Cheetah EP out on Warp Records Friday 8th July and it’s an exciting taste of what to expect from the electronica legend.

Still as enjoyable as this clip is, it’s hard not to pine for the days of Chris Cunningham’s twisted Windowlicker and Come To Daddy clips, but at least he’s keeping things weird.
