AFL Does Good, Recruits Megan Washington For Women’s Grand Final

The AFL has pulled off another Aussie Grand Final lineup, today announcing that singer-songwriter Megan Washington will perform at the AFL Women’s Grand Final on the Gold Coast this Saturday.

Washington, who was born in Papua New Guinea but moved to Brisbane as a child, is set to perform the Australian national anthem before the Brisbane Lions face off against the Adelaide Crows, as well as a bunch of her own songs.

The muso says she’s “excited and honoured” to be part of the women’s Grand Final.

“It’s an historic day for the Australian sporting community… it’s been inspiring to witness such a high level of community support for the women’s competition,” she says.

The AFL has copped criticism over its grand final music choices in the last few years, after recruiting the likes of Chris Isaak, Ellie Goulding, Bryan Adams and (of course) Meatloaf to perform at its season-ending game.

Luckily, last year’s AFL Grand Final scored an all-Aussie lineup featuring Vance Joy and The Living End, and now the new women’s league has done the right thing too by choosing an Australian woman to perform.

Washington released her first new song in two years, ‘Saint Lo’, late last year, and is currently working on a new album, which will be the follow-up to 2014’s There There.
