As Variety report, the musical, which will centre around the Seattle grunge scene of the 1990s, has been commissioned by Seattle Repertory Theatre.
The creators are currently working on the licensing for the musical, drawing from BMG’s publishing catalogue which includes Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and Smashing Pumpkins.
Nirvana’s former manager Janet Billig Rich and BMG executive Elyse Cogan are both working on the untitled project. The storyline has been conceived by the artistic director of the O’Neill Theater Center’s National Playwrights Conference, Wendy C. Goldberg.
It’s still very early days for the musical and it’s likely to be sometime before we have an idea of what songs will be used and who will act in it but it’s an exciting prospect.
It’s also likely to be a stirring tribute to grunge pioneer Chris Cornell who passed away earlier this year. Soundgarden were one of the leading forces of the early ’90s Seattle grunge scene and it sounds like their music will aptly be a large part of the project.
