A.B. Original Have Taken Out The 2016 Australian Music Prize

A.B. Original have won the Australian Music Prize for 2016 with their record Reclaim Australia, beating out eight other albums that were shortlisted for the prize.

The duo comprising of Briggs and Trials will take home $30,000 for taking the annual prize, winning out over other nominees including Olympia’s Self Talk, The Avalanches’ Wildflower and Big Scary’s Animal.

“Trials and I are from two different communities. My old man is here 2nite. He’s never been to a show (laughs),” Briggs said collecting the award with Trials holding a massive cheque next to him.

Reclaim Australia is the duo’s debut album and it charted within the top 10 in the country when it was released last year.

It features a host of guests including Thelma Plum, Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu and Archie Roach.

The record now joins an esteemed list of past winners including Courtney Barnett (Sometimes I Sit And Think And Sometimes I Just Think), Augie March (Moo, You Bloody Choir), Eddy Current Suppression Ring (Primary Colours), The Jezabels (Prisoner), Hermitude (HyperParadise) and Big Scary (Not Art).
