2013 J Award Winners Announced

The winners of this year’s J Awards have been revealed, with Australian EDM golden boy Flume taking home the big prize. His self-titled album was favourite to win in the category of Album of The Year and it came as a surprise to very few when the final announcement was made.

Flume has capped off a mammoth year, beating out ten other contenders for the top prize, including Cloud Control, The Drones, Karnivool and Jagwar Ma. Speaking on the winning album, Triple J music director Richard Kingsmill said:

“Flume’s self-titled debut is remarkable for so many reasons. It had equal measures of light and dark, upbeat and mellow, straightforward and obscure. Where he will take his music now is as exciting a prospect as this album has been for us all in 2013.”

Flume, real name Harley Streten accepted the award via video message from the UK, thanking Triple J for their championing of his music and recounted launching his live show at the station’s One Night Stand event in Dubbo earlier this year, describing it as the perfect way to do it.

Meanwhile the J Award for ‘Unearthed Artist Of The Year’ went to Melbourne emcee Remi, organisers citing his tracks Sangria and Saggin’ as two cuts that exemplified his on-point and poetic flow, for which the rising star took home one of the bigger honours bestowed on an unsigned artist.

‘Australian Music Video Of The Year’ went to Clubfeet‘s visually splendrous and wildly popular video for Everything You Wanted, directed by Oh Yeah Wow member Josh Thomas. The clip struck such a chord this year that several international imitations have shown up on YouTube.
