Sydney’s Winter People are proud to announce the release of their debut album, “A Year At Sea” – out 21 September and their national album tour. The album follows hot on the heels of the band’s beloved single “Gallons”, which spawned an acclaimed EP in April and a national tour in May/June.
Helmed by singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and visual artist, Dylan Baskind, Winter People has blossomed into a sprawling six-piece, boasting no fewer than two violin players and five vocalists. Combining the pastoral harmonies of the old world, with the bitter edges of the new one, Winter People create songs of the modern wilderness.
Since bursting into the spotlight in 2010, Winter People's timeless compositions - including Triple J favourites "Wishingbone" and "Gallons" - have seen them become an object of local and international adoration. This is no more obvious that in the list of expert craftsmen who contributed to the album; including recording by Tim Whitten (Augie March, The Go-Betweens), production by Brooklyn extraordinaire Peter Katis (Interpol, The National, Frightened Rabbit) and mixing by Rich Costey (The Shins, Foster The People, Bloc Party). The result is an album packed with mood, texture and emotion; evoking everything from the harmonies du jour of Fleet Foxes to the roaring swells of Radiohead.
Yet, it is during their arrestingly intimate live performances that Winter People are most in their element. Having played to five sold-out Corner Hotels with Megan Washington, toured nationally with Gossling and undertaken their celebrated "Gallons" headline tour in May/June 2012, Winter People show stunning ability to bridge from warm acoustics and A Capella to sweeping strings and tumultuous harmonies. This sort of unique journey seems only possible via Baskind's unique and personal approach to songcraft: "It begins with an instinct or feeling, something hidden and shapeless and boundless, and transformed into something definite through the concrete logical structures of music and words. From the ocean to the land: "A Year At Sea".
