Featuring some of the nation's best acoustic music, from bluegrass, to folk and gypsy swing.

The Perch Creek Family Jug Band have anthropologists baffled. Why did they turn out the way they are? Was it because they all drank and bathed in the muddy waters of Perch Creek from birth? Was it because they were forced to sing for each meal, or simply because their old man was nothing short of a lunatic? Either way, circumstances conspired to create a band of siblings with an incredibly unique and diverse sound that seems to find it's way through the cracks between a vast array of genres.

Like the creek itself, Perch Creek Family Jug Band are at times raging and relentless and at others placid and haunting. The band specialise in chunky five-part vocal harmonies over instrumentation as diverse as the trombone, frailing banjo, washboard, double bass, overdriven blues harp, musical saw, tap dancing and a whole lot of other stuff including, of course, the jug. Must be something in the water...

Taking it back to a simpler time, where the pickin' was fast and the banjo was king, The Quarry Mountain Dead Rats from Victoria's Mornington Peninsula, bring their raw & gritty version of bluegrass kicking and hollering into the modern day. They establish an 'old mate' affinity with their audiences while delivering a kick-you-in-the-face live show, setting the tone for a sing along, drink along, foot-stomping good time. QMDR's instrumentation of banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar, double bass and washboard fits the bluegrass mold, but the influence of old-time mountain-music combined with rock'n'roll sensibilities, give way to something altogether different. Revellers are no doubt drawn to QMDR's humour and anything goes attitude, but what stands out is their ability to tear into their songs with an intensity that's rare for an acoustic band.

Looking like they have barely hit puberty, The Bearded Gypsy Band ooze musical brilliance way beyond their years. The quartet are notorious in their home state of South Australia for providing an unlikely party atmosphere with their moving arrangements that draw influence from gypsy swing, jazz and folk.
