And she's succeeding every step of the way!" - Fringe Benefits Adelaide Folk musician, Kelly Beaumont (aka The Brouhaha) is all about the 'Feelgood' side of life. With achingly soulful vocals her uplifting music is more than a simple band-aid to the blues. In 2012/13 The Brouhaha and Margo (her faithful Tarago) travelled The East Coast extensively in addition to a string of supports including Clare Bowditch, Mia Dyson, Liz Stringer, Sarah Mcleod, Jen Cloher and Wes Carr. Her first single garnered Triple J and ABC radio play and became a community radio hit airing at #3 on the AMRAP Airplay Chart before the solo artist hit burnout. Such a massive undertaking took its toll and Beaumont experienced symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, anxiety and depression. As a child Beaumont's father was a banker whose work frequently required the family to transfer around regional areas of Australia. Stopping in towns such as Port Augusta and Berri, Kelly experienced the loneliness that always being "the new girl" can bring, and sought solace in music. "My guitar was my friend", says Beaumont of these difficult formative years. Bullying and a deep sense of isolation led to a low self image, and self-destructive habits including self-harm. Despite the pain of these formative years, Beaumont's investment in music has earned her stripes in the guitar-playing stakes. She is acknowledged by her peers as playing a mean guitar, and her instrumental skill is easily appreciated by lay-person and expert alike. In recent months Kel has finally found her voice - metaphorically and literally and employs hard-won wisdom gained through past pain as fuel in her pursuit of happiness. In Smile its Free she invites us to do the same. With her debut EP being re-released August 8th and a new approach to touring, The Brouhaha is maintaining an intense optimism and holistic approach to music making that you can't help being drawn in to. After 6 months off, The Brouhaha will re-launch this coming August along with an East Coast tour this September to re-release Smile it's Free.
