The Hi-Fi - Melbourne, VIC
AWME Opening Night featuring The Bamboos, Saskwatch, Electric Empire and Dave Dow, plus guest DJs.
Bandleader Lance Ferguson and his nine-piece Melbourne outfit, The Bamboos, have come a long way since forming in 2001. Initially inspired by the instrumental raw funk of the late '60s and early '70s, they made waves internationally and were quickly labeled as one of the greatest funk and soul bands of our time. The band's current single 'I Got Burned' featuring Tim Rogers is one of the most played songs on radio at the moment - debuting at #19 on the Aria Australian Singles chart.
Taking cues from the likes of James and Aretha, as well as New York's banging modern soul scene, Saskwatch smash out their live shows hard, rough and tight - just like the old days. Leading the nine-piece Melbourne soul explosion is singer, Nkechi Anele, who adeptly takes audiences on a journey from the depths of heartache to overwhelming joy in just one show.
Echoing the likes of Curtis Mayfield and Donny Hathaway, Electric Empire bring a funked-up neo-soul twist to the old school sound. The Melbourne based three-piece deliberately shunned the high-end digital sound on their recordings, opting for warm analogue-smooth compositions. Having played Glastonbury in 2010, the band is continuing to make an indelible mark on the music scene both locally and abroad.
Brisbane based Dave Dow seamlessly blends of roots, soul, R&B, gospel, jazz, funk and down 'n' dirty Motown; creating a musical experience that to everyone regardless of age or musical preference.
