Event Details

One Drop Rankin Riddim is a Jamaican expression for A Great Reggae Groove!

Every year the Rankin Riddim team will aim to showcase the wealth of talent based in the Sydney area and when possible bring someone in from interstate or overseas as an extra added bonus to what we already have.

The shows will be produced under the guidance of vintage performer Pat Powell with Dale Ryan and Rosalie Bock.

The One Drop Rankin Riddim team aim to nurture their productions until they get to festival status growing from this seedling into something bigger but for now we'll start with "from little things, big things" and you know the rest.

The riddims will kick off 8pm sharp 'til late!

More about our performers

Wilbur Theodore Cole AKA Stranger Cole

Stranger Cole is, simply put "A Giant of Reggae". He is one of the most important living links to the birth of the Jamaican sound with a career full of hits spanning all eras beginning with the proto-Ska "Rough and Tough" for Duke Reid in 1962. His mid-sixties rocksteady duets with Patsy Todd and Gladdy Anderson respectively are considered to be a high-point of the genre. In 1968, Stranger Cole's "Bangarang" with its choppy keyboard and one drop drumming marked the beginning of a new sound, Reggae.

He is one of the foundation artists of the Jamaican sound of rhythm and Blues, Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae that emanated from the island during the late fifties through to the sixties. Having visited our shores three times in the last ten years playing to full houses in Melbourne and Sydney, Stranger is ready to entertain, mesmerise and charm a new audience at this year's festival. His stage presence exudes a love for life and the music and his beautifully crafted songs stand the test of time. He will be supported by an all-star band who have been handpicked from Melbourne's top Reggae and Ska acts to reproduce the sounds of the early backing bands in Jamaica in the sixties. Stranger Cole recently played the major role of narrator in the documentary movie 'Rocksteady: the Roots of Reggae', produced by Moss Raxlan which charted the sounds, and history of Rocksteady, a music that was being played on the island of Jamaica between 1966 and 1968. The rhythms have stayed with us and touched a new generation of fans 50 years on.

Stranger Cole's voice is distinctive and his live performances are equally famous. Irrepressibly happy with boundless energy belying his 70 years on the planet, he connects with the audience like very few can. In 2010 he stole the show with his cameo performance in support of Dawn Penn at The Melbourne Ska Orchestra's sold out "Roots or Rocksteady" concert. By popular demand Stranger Cole returns to Australia for a one night only performance in Sydney.

As he says "MORE LIFE".

Club Ska

Club Ska came together because of a mutual love of old school Jamaican Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae. Pulling away from the Two Tone styled Ska bands of the eighties they carved a solid niche for themselves touring Australia and building a solid following of fans from Perth to Adelaide and most of the eastern seaboard as well as inland. They released three singles to critical acclaim plus the rare collectable Igniters 85 EP.

Having recently dusted off the cobwebs at last years Australia Day SkaBQ, Club Ska are back with a skank and a smile, our fans have a good attitude say's Pat Powell lead singer of the band, they go out to have a good time and they're appreciative from the word go, they sing with us they dance with us, they know the songs and that's why it's always a pleasure to perform.

Club Ska remain true to their ethos. "Let's have a bloody good time!"
