What made more money than the entire American movie industry through the 50s and 60s? Pinball. Special When Lit rediscovers the lure of a lost pop icon. A product of the mechanical and electrical age, the American invention swept the world and defined cool. Now it is relegated to a nostalgic footnote deserving a better fate.
This feature length documentary joins the fans, collectors, designers and champion players from across the globe who share a world many of us didnt know still existed.
Special When Lit is the work of Brett Sullivan, Clayton Jacobsen and Emily Rickard from post-production house Steam Motion & Sound who visited countless pinball shows and tournaments to get a true feel for the way collectors, competitors and industry insiders feel about pinball.
At a time where we can instantly access any song or movie from our past, pinball offers a throwback to an tactile experience that cant be digitally reproduced. Special When Lit captures the passion for a game that inspired generations. But it also recounts the loss of a certain way of living and playing. Whatever the future, Special When Lit will leave you searching for an arcade to line up your coins to master the silver ball. Will the machine always win?
After more than a year of editing and post-production, the 97 minute documentary premiered at the Raindance Film Festival in London and was nominated for the Best Documentary award.
Now the Chauvel Cinema in Sydney brings you the Australian Premier of Special When Lit.
