Hailing from Washington D.C., reggae band SOJA hit the Prince Bandroom on Saturday 6th April.
SOJA's incredible live shows have seen them become festival favourites throughout the States and Europe, and now for the first time in Australia at Bluesfest 2013. They will also do a series of side shows in Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sydney.
SOJA have raised the bar with Strength to Survive, their fourth full-length album, an intoxicating mix of hot-rod reggae grooves and urgent, zeitgeist-capturing themes. The album, produced by John Alagia (Dave Matthews, John Mayer, O.A.R.), will be the band's first for ATO, the label co-founded by Dave Matthews.
Over the past few years, SOJA has sold more than 200,000 albums, headlined large theatres in more than 15 countries around the world, generated over 30 million+ YouTube views, amassed more than 1.5 million Facebook fans and made their national TV debut on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. But it's live that they have had their greatest success - following a sold-out album release run across the US, SOJA have also toured with and supported O.A.R., Gentleman, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Disco Biscuits, Damian Marley, UB40, Matisyahu, 311, Slightly Stoopid and Dave Matthews Band.
With Strength to Survive, the band makes an impassioned call for unity and change with universally relatable songs about faith, hope and love. "I could go on and on about the horrible damage we've done to the earth or the problems that arise when countries compete for money over an imaginary border, but the album has one central theme," says Hemphill, "and that's our hope for the world to be one family." Hemphill says the band's simple and honest approach to music is what's enabled them to break through obstacles of language, distance and culture in amassing an international following.
Supporting SOJA on their Australian tour is the band called: CURRENT SWELL (CANADA)
Current Swell, surf rock band, with their impossibly infectious songs, beautifully crafted stories and their distinctive combination of raw blues & earthy roots will hold you captivated. Their brilliantly polished live sound is showcased on their new album Long Time Ago; the perfect companion on long summer road trips with their sun inspired guitar riffs and twangy harmonica.
