Samuel Yirga is a young pianist from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with a Real World Records release through his involvement with the band Dub Colossus. He has only been playing piano for a little over 5 years and finished music school at the start of 2008, yet at the age of just 25 has developed into what can only be described as a prodigy.
Bridging contemporary and classical jazz, celebrated pop songs from the golden era of Ethiopian music, traditional Ethiopian rhythms and classical piano undertones, this astounding new discovery from Addis has dramatically opened up another whole new window on a musical genre and region already in the spotlight.
What goes on inside Yirga's head while he's playing would make a fascinating documentary in itself... He makes Ethiojazz but not like anyone else, the invention and genre-bending are unique, the power of his sense of composition totally virtuosic.
"Our musical culture is under attack from inside and out. It's all rock bands, hip-hop groups and pop singers," explains the young Ethiopian. "I take traditional music and turn it around".
The line-up:
