'PROUDLY POKIES FREE' CAMPAIGN LAUNCH Tickets
5:00pm, Sun 23rd October, 2016
Oxford Art Factory, NSW
On Sunday October 23rd, some of Sydney’s favourite artists will help launch the new, youth-focused movement, Proudly Pokies Free, at Oxford Art Factory.
Proudly Pokies Free celebrates and promotes pokies free venues in Sydney and ultimately aims to reduce the massive harm that pokies cause in Australian communities. Spearheading the campaign is sibling duo, Anna and Tom Lawrence. The pair have been inspired by the work of their late father, Neil Lawrence, who made the 2015 documentary film Kaching! Pokie Nation which was released on the ABC.
"It's time for the young people of Sydney to learn about the scale and harm of the pokies and to make better informed decisions regarding their nights out" says campaign director, Tom Lawrence. "The pokies have become an unnecessary fixture of the Australian pub and we want to promote an alternative vision for our nightlife, one that thrives on innovation, live music and true hospitality", he says.
The launch event will feature performances from a diverse range of Sydney acts in support of the campaign. Included in the bill is an intimate set from Tim Freedman, frontman of The Whitlams. In 1999, The Whitlams released the hit single "Blow Up The Pokies", a moving track about Freedman's close friend and bandmate who struggled with a pokies addiction and ultimately took his own life.
"I'm proud to be involved with the Proudly Pokies Free movement to hopefully encourage a mindset that rewards and encourages venues that show imagination in programming and curating their activities." Said Freedman, "It's time for the people of Sydney to push back against the pokies"
The night will also feature Sydney favourite eclectic DJ, JOYRIDE, and performances from surf psych newcomers Wild Honey, electronic duo Left., and Bad Deep DJs. Very special secret guests will also be announced on the night, as well as some short speeches from guest speakers.
"We are asking the young people of Sydney to join us for a night of great music and positive vibes" says campaign manager, Anna Lawrence. "This night is about celebrating the incredible musicians that exist in this city and challenging an industry which makes it harder for them to thrive."
With NSW alone hosting 50% of Australia's 200,000 pokies machines, it is only fitting that the campaign is to launch here in Sydney, with a future aim of spreading throughout the state and the rest of Australia.
Proudly Pokies Free campaign launch will be held at Oxford Art Factory, Sydney, on Sunday 23rd October, 2016. Doors at 5pm.
