Drawing and Painting: Getting Started
8 x Thursdays, 13 October - 1 December
6:30pm - 9pm
Tutor: Jane Caveney
Intimate class size: maximum 10 students
View the world through the eyes of an artist and learn a whole new way of looking. Throughout this 8-week course, artist Jane Caveney will teach you how to see the world in a new light through drawing and painting still life compositions.
Gain an understanding of colour theory, composition and how to use a range of materials including pencil, ink, charcoal, varnishes and acrylic paint on both paper and canvas. Each week you'll learn a new technique based on the principles of form, tone, composition and colour. You'll discover the work of local and international artists and gain an understanding of how their work addresses the techniques you're learning.
At the end of the course, you'll feel comfortable to begin your own self-directed practice, and you'll have a new appreciation of visual and technical processes through which art is created.
Full instruction is provided on materials, products, tools, equipment and studio procedures. Non-toxic processes will be offered wherever possible.
Level: designed for beginners or for more experienced students who want to brush up on their skills.

Next level class: intermediate to advanced
Location: Darlington Studio
About our tutor: For 15 years Jane has exhibited her work in Sydney and NSW. Jane holds a Master of Fine Art from the University of NSW College of Fine Arts (now UNSW Art & Design). She has created and run youth workshops, art classes and community educational projects employing art, environmental sustainability and recycling as major themes in her classes. Jane finds her adult classes are a great joy to teach. It's a pleasure seeing students come back time and again and seeing some go on to graduate from art school.
