Sydney Latin American Film Festival Presents
Opening Night Film & Fiesta - MIA
7:00pm, Thu 6th September, 2012
Dendy Cinema Opera Quays, NSW
This event has passed and sales are now closed
The Sydney Latin American Film Festival opens on September 6 at the beautiful Dendy Opera Quays and runs through to September 16, closing at the uber-cool Bankstown Arts Centre. This year we have invited over 30-award winning Australian premiers from 15 different countries, putting together a brilliant program and a fantastic selection of extra special events that showcase the rich cultural landscape of Latin America.
The Sydney Latin American Festival has partnered with The Paragon Hotel at Circular Quay to host one very special Fiesta following the screening of Mia. Headlining the entertainment will be Cumbiamuffin, the unstoppable collective of Cumbia, Ragga and Reggae sounds that has been conquering Sydney's music scene - and yes, they're as much fun as they sound!
Feast on a delicious selection of Latin-inspired bites and enjoy our favourite drinks from Cristal beer, Argento wines and Tres Cruces beer. But before the action starts, join us for a pre-screening performance by Patio de Tango. Grab your tickets early as every year our Opening Night Fiestas sell out.
MIA
FEATURE / ARGENTINA / 2011 / JAVIER VAN DE COUTER / 105 MIN / SPANISH / ENGLISH SUBTITLES
Ale is a transgender vagabond existing on the fringes of society. She lives in a shantytown with other homeless and marginalised people - they are 'cartoneros', surviving by collecting and recycling rubbish from the streets.
When Ale happens upon the diary of a woman who has recently committed suicide she becomes absorbed and entranced with its contents. Mia's diary is filled with stories about, and dedicated to, her young daughter. Reading the diary, Ale feels maternal stirrings and takes it upon herself to return the diary to the young girl.
A heart-warming, gentle, deeply moving drama that challenges society's perception of people living on the fringe.
"Winner of the Best Film - Premio Maguey at the 2012 Guadalajara International Film Festival"
The Sydney Latin American Film Festival is a non-profit organisation, run by a passionate and dedicated team of volunteers and collaborators. Monies raised from ticket sales are donated to community development projects.
