Montero is quite the Melbourne supergroup, led by comic book/video artist, songwriter and frontman extraordinaire Ben Montero with long time collaborator Gerald Wells on synths, Geoffrey O 'Connor on guitar, Guy Blackman on piano, local producer Robert Bravington on bass and Cameron Potts (Ninety Nine, Baseball, Brighter Later) on the drumkit. Montero's latest epic devotional, Passions, is lifted from their debut LP The Loving Gaze, due August 16 on Mistletone / Inertia.

They'll be joined by homies Early Woman, a new and swaggeringly catchy collaboration between Hannah Brooks (ex Young Professionals, St Helens, Spider Vomit) and Ben Montero, with Bobby Bravington on bass and Caitlin Perry on drums. This will be Early Woman's first Sydney show, after a string of Melbourne dates with Love of Diagrams, Scott & Charlene's Wedding, Lost Animal and Peak Twins. Expect big choruses, out-of-work Bjorn and Agnetha harmonies, depraved lyrics about loving your brothers, tarot cards, spies in love, desperation, feathers and believing in the power of love.

Openers are Drown Under, another must-experience new group featuring the Sydney scene's enfants terrible: Jack Mannix (Circle Pit), Sarah Davis (Whores), Dean Adam (Housewives), Laura Hunt (Ghastly Spats) and Matt Nev (Snotty Babies); all of whom share a love of Germs, Fang, Hole, Flipper, Suicide, Royal Trux and other ne'er-do-wells. Circle Pit DJs will start your night right; DJ Marcel Whyler (buzz kull) will make it end in (joyful) tears.

Montero operate in the rich lineage of widescreen soft rock tradition painted with a psychedelic pop brush, updating the romantic classicism and balladry of golden era love songs. The music of Montero evokes the extended soundscapes and textures of '70s prog, the easy listening adult weirdness of Jimmy Webb and Bacharach, the sports arena pounding of vintage MOR rock at its best; sometimes all in the space of one song. With an emphasis on clear vocals, Gibb brothers style harmonies, soaring melodies, lush instrumentation and dreamy glam pomp, Montero's lyrics venture into gently abstract, sometimes surreal realms of romance, yearning, and wonder.

Live, the band ignites Montero's odysseys with an explosive rock'n'roll power; thundering drums, vintage synths squiggles, Liberace piano interludes and Ben Montero's mystic frontman presence combine to deliver a richly numinous musical experience. Montero's live shows are celebratory, exploratory and at times chaotic, treating even the smallest room like a delirious sports stadium. Montero have been featured in a Noisey / VICE documentary and have supported Yeasayer and Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti. Montero's much-anticipated debut, The Loving Gaze, demonstrates the stunning depth of Ben Montero's songwriting and the artistic ambition of this groundbreaking band.
