Event Details

British DJ, composer and musical innovator, Mira Calix presents intimate works for electronics and instrumentalists in an intimate space.

Mira Calix is not afraid to challenge musical convention or cross genre boundaries. She creates music of unconventional  beauty, working with found sound, electronics, voice and classical instrumentation. Her prolific and innovative approach to composition has led to a critically-acclaimed catalogue of work. She has been commissioned to set both the words of one of Britain's most acclaimed and award winning contemporary poets, Alice Oswald and that of its most established; William Shakespeare, to music. She has released music alongside avant-garde classical composers like Sir Harrison Birtwistle and Jonathan Harvey and collaborated with indie innovators such as Malcolm Middleton (Arab Strap) and Brian McComber (Dirty Projectors). She has supported Radiohead on a leg of their Kid A tour and composed Nunu for the London Sinfonietta and a chorus of insects. She has release five albums on Warp Records.

METROPOLIS NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL

This event is part of the 2013 Metropolis New Music Festival, bringing the sound of contemporary London to Melbourne Recital Centre. London's splendour and squalor is the ultimate hotbed of creativity and this year's festival explores this vast maze of music. The sonic magic of composer/conductor/pianist Thomas Ad s' chamber and orchestral music meets the iconoclastic electronica of Matthew Herbert. Drum 'n' Bass, DJs, politics and chamber opera easily (and sometimes uneasily) share the same space.

Three leading composer/performers will be in residence to present their works, and a world wide web of their musical influences and obsessions in concerts, talks and DJ sets.
