Grouse Party & Penny Drop presents LIGHT ASYLUM (USA) & NICKY DA B (USA) on June 1st at Phoenix Public House.

GROUSE PARTY turns it up two-fold with a double-header of live performances from Light Asylum (USA) and Nicky Da B (USA) on Friday 1st June at Phoenix Public House. New York duo Light Asylum head the bill with the powerful intensity of frontwoman Shannon Funchess, and the dark electro synth of Bruno Coviello. Their first visit to Australia comes amid the release of their rabidly anticipated self-titled album, out this Friday 4th May.

Just announced to support, in his only Melbourne show, Nicky Da B is on the rise as a next generation New Orleans Bounce rapper, hot on the heels of Big Freedia, and having been shot to international attention by way of an explosive new single Express Yourself with Diplo. In true Grouse Party fashion, its half gig, half party, with DJ Sveta (SYD) and DJ Ann Ominous rounding out the line-up and laying it down til late.

LIGHT ASYLUM (USA) - The debut full-length album from New Yorks LIGHT ASYLUM has been a long time coming, but not without rabid anticipation. As their self-released In Tension EP circulated and resonated with new leagues of listeners worldwide, the reputation of duo Shannon Funchess and Bruno Coviello sweltered via their intense live show, collaborations, and remixes. Throwing a midnight shadow thats impossible to ignore, the pair used industrial electronica, driving 80s synthesizers and pitch-black imagery to powerful effect. Fronted by an amazing sting force, Shannon Funchess is undoubtedly the real deal, described by The Guardian as a cyborg soul girl in the manner of Grace Jones. Pitchfork Media goes on in saying She manages to route her sinewy vocal through the cold-blooded seething of Ian Curtis the deadpan drawl of Grace Jones and the full-tilt intensity of Henry Rollins circa Damaged. Light Asylums self-titled LP is finally due for release May 4 (through Mexican Summer/Co-op), before they crash our shores in June.

NICKY DA B (USA) - From the next generation of New Orleans Bounce Rappers, NICKY DA B is coming into international prominence, running in the footsteps of Big Freedia and Katey Red, ten years his senior. Nickys style is a little smoother than his contemporaries (though his lyrics are no less explicit) and his delivery is very unique...something like the abstract vocal sounds of Jamaican Dancehall combined with the tried and true, call and response, party style of NoLa Bounce. At 21 years old, NICKY DA B has already shared the stage with all the legends of the Bounce community, and hes obsessed with helping Bounce take root at an international level. Partnering with DIPLO (Mad Decent) is one sureshot way to do that! Their new single Express Yourself has catapulted NICKY DA B into public awareness, with a wild Nawlins block-shaking video to match. Australia is next on the map. Nickys live show includes DJ Rusty Lazer and three of New Orleans finest poppers as his booty-backing dancers. Exclusive to Grouse, this cannot be missed! Watch Express Yourself and see for yourself!
