Event Details

Slick DIY garage pop inspired by the riot grrrl movement, Sydney's JuliaWhy? are playing in Wollongong for the first time, to launch their brand new single 'Candy' at Rad Bar on October 4.

Led by Julia Wylie (bass/vox), Caleb Jacobs (guitar/vox) and Peter Beringer (drums), the trio have so far supported the likes of international indie favourites The Courtneys (Canada), The Lemon Twigs (U.S), Waxahatchee (U.S.) and Hinds (Spain).

Candy is the first single off the trio's new album, due out in 2018. Recorded and mixed at Audile Design in Marrickville (the drummer Peter Beringer's own studio), Candy is a punchy lament to the slow decay of addiction, to be officially released on Tuesday 26 September.

Joining them on October 4 to launch the new single at Rad Bar will be Los Pintar, Sun Sap and Neighbours (also from Sydney).

Their debut record WHEEL was released in 2015 through independent Sydney label EXXE RECORDS. Their first single 'Just One Night' won the triple j Unearthed NIDA competition, leading to radio and Rage airplay.

Henry Rollins played 'What You Want' on KCRW in the United States, after it was featured on the Australian label Rice Is Nice's compilation alongside Miss Destiny and Major Leagues. Australian blog FasterLouder also chose JuliaWhy? as their 2015 One To Watch and their song Painkiller made triple j Unearthed's Top 10 songs of 2015.

After launching Wheel in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, JuliaWhy? made their overseas debut at Canadian Music Week in May 2015 where they supported Fat White Family and Gateway Drugs and were chosen as one of just 10 Australian bands to play the Sounds Australia Aussie BBQ.

Afterwards, JuliaWhy? embarked on a 17 date self-managed, independent tour across Canada with the help of Edmonton legend Daniel Lenz (Blurred Lenz) and Vancouver trouper Kyle Haack (Snail Productions).

Soon later, with the help of Planetary Group, Wheel debuted at #13 on College Radio Charts in the United States.

  • "JuliaWhy? is the axe slinging femme fatal that we were all in dire need of." - Cameron Menegoni, 2SER radio
  • "What it comes down to is infectious and fantastic songs. They're short knockouts that scrape away bullshit, and replace it with the kind of delirious, fuzzy pop that put Karen O and Sleater-Kinney on the map." - Ryan Saar, FBi Radio/Soundly Sounds
  • "Scratchy, frenetic, gritty and catchy as hell." - Dom Alessio, TRIPLE J radio
  • "Hazy, grungy echo-laden melodic girl-driven shoegaze with a punk rock edge that keeps the treble set properly is the order of the day and Julia Why? have nailed the brief." - LouderSoft (USA)

What: Candy, new single by JuliaWhy? will be released officially on Tuesday September 26

When: Launch party at 8pm, October 4 with Los Pintar, Sun Sap, Neighbours (Syd)
