The Garden Party presents
Jens Lekman / Courtney Barnett / Melodie Nelson
Via Gothenburg, Sweden, singer and storyteller Jens Lekman drops in to The Garden Party with his full band, bringing his gorgeous world of witty pop and endless palette of strings, samples and keys.
JENS LEKMAN
Across thirteen EPs and three albums, Jens Lekman has made hopeless romantics of us all. Repurposing for his own oeuvre the world's great lost pop hooks, he has breathed melody into tales of bushfires and break-ups, Kirsten Dunst and avocados, sham marriages and drive-in bingo - his contagious deadpan and rapturous orchestration serving up life at its most heartbreaking, loving and absurd.
His first full-length in over five years, the newly released I Know What Love Isn't uses string-kissed chamber-pop to tell of love from the flipside. Written and recorded between Melbourne and Gothenburg, it features Australian vocalists Sophia Brous - his duet partner on 'Erica America', and Kellie Sutherland of Architecture in Helsinki.
Having celebrated his 500th show in London this September, Jens' live performances are entwined with stories, joyous and intimate. Performing from I Know What Love Isn't for the first time, Jens Lekman and his tenderly illustrated universe descends on The Garden Party as part of a summer of great music.
COURTNEY BARNETT
Piercingly honest songwriting and a sound that is inspired by 90s grunge. Courtney Barnett's husky vocals traverse their way through laid back lyrics alongside bobbing rhythms and quirky guitar riffs. Courtney's definitely not a sweet pop songstress, but she is real and fresh and her witty, poetic lyrics get you hooked.
MELODIE NELSON
Melodie Nelson, the solo moniker of Lia Tsamoglou, has created something a little darker and synth-driven on her second album To The Dollhouse, with out compromising the pop hooks and playfulness that market her debut.
A careful balance is typical of To The Dollhouse, a record that proudly evokes the grainy projections of 1960's and 70s cinema, the soundtracks of Dario Argento, and memories of the seedier side of suburbia. Grander and more colourful than it's predecessor, To The Dollhouse sees Melodie Nelson cast herself bravely into her own sonic world.
