Blue Beat, NSW
This event has passed and sales are now closed
For the second Collaborate!! night we are proud to present: ARABESK + YESHE. Collaborate!! nights feature 2 of the hottest artists from the ihearmusic.com community. Each artist plays a one hour set, then for the finale the 2 artists collaborate by bringing their unique talents together. One plus one is three!
The music of ARABESK follows many paths at any one time. Like a river it is fed from many different tributaries to form the whole, drawing upon strong jazz influences...Django Reinhardt, Wes Montgomery, Eastern European Gypsy/Classical music, upon a backdrop of heavily African and Arabic influenced rhythms. At any moment it will swing hard, only to drop into a thick funk pumped bass line, all the while the violin floating above it. The drums hammer and thunder beats reminiscent of Motown, Blue Note and Afro Cuban jazz.
Formed in 2003, Arabesk includes Rob Shannon (Guitar, d'rrbuka), Veren Grigorov (violin), James Haselwood (bass) and Calvin Welch (Drums). Highlights of the past year include top billing at the Takatsuki Jazz Festival in Japan, performing at The Sydney Fringe Festival and the winner of Best Instrumental Track at the 2011 Australian Songwriters Association Awards for the song "Good Month, Bad Month".
Born in Germany, YESHE immersed himself in the European world music scene of the '70s, beginning his musical education early when meeting with African master Mustapha Tettey Addy and touring the world from age 16. For many years Yeshe lived the passionate life of the quintessential musical nomad, making numerous pilgrimages to Africa, the birthplace of the music he now makes his own, honing his percussion skills and developing an affinity for the traditional African sounds of the Mbira and Kamele Ngoni.
Yeshe first rose to acclaim in 2003 with his debut World Citizen, an album steeped in African rhythms and tied together by his unique vocals. The release brought him recognition as an artist to watch on the emerging world music scene. With Roots & Wings, Yeshe has evolved further, taking his western-tinged world sounds and expanding upon them to create an album of remarkable beauty and poise. Opening track "Peace of Mind" was voted Number One in the World category of the esteemed Billboard World Song Contest 2009. Progressive, evolving, powerful and rooted in the earth, Yeshe continues to push cultural boundaries to find new sounds, new experiences and share simple
messages of hope and peace.
And for your enhanced listening pleasure, DJ BRENT CLOUGH will improvise some tunes which complement Arabesk and Yeshe. Brent is one of the creators and current presenter of the ABC RN's 'audio adventure' The Night Air.
COLLABORATE!! @BLUE BEAT - an exciting new format to experience live original Australian music!
