After 500 years of uninterrupted plunder of its natural resources and the fierce repression of popular revolts, Latin America is at a turning point in its history. New leaders have come to power, most of them from outside the traditional political establishments and all elected democratically. Can these leaders satisfy their peoples hunger for change? Is it possible to portray the spirit of what is happening in a single film?Three years ago, director Gonzalo Arijn asked himself these questions, grabbed his camera and the book The Open Veins of Latin America by Eduardo Galeano (the same book Chavez gave to Obama as a present) and embarked on a journey of discovery. He visited, Brazil, Bolivia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Uruguay the aim was to understand and get to know the men and women who, in their everyday struggles, have shaped this singular moment in history. A journey that sets itself to be as political as it is poetic. CASULA CLOSING NIGHT FILM & FIESTA Weve made it to our 5th year and wed like you to join us to celebrate! Sunday 19th September marks the closing night of the 5th Sydney Latin American Film Festival, and to celebrate were opening the bar, offering complimentary drinks on arrival before the screening of Eyes Wide Open.
