As an exclusive premiere for the Umbrella Winter City Sounds curated program, Adelaide-based and internationally renowned cabaret songstress Anya Anastasia is crafting an intimate evening of songs unlike anything she's ever done before. "Normal Songs".
Anastasia is performing a stripped-back exploration of what lies at the heart of her visually extravagant touring productions: the songwriting. Underneath the elaborate staging and costuming, the complex orchestration and the frills of the stage-shows, are the lyrics, the melodies, the threads of thought, the feelings -but what happens when you take away the rest, and just listen. Melodies and words, in low lights, in a little bunker underneath the city, in the heart of winter in the heart of mid-town Adelaide...
With a voice that ranges from husky cabaret growl, to soaring operatic soprano, comparisons to Kate Bush, Yma Sumac, Shirley Bassey, Tim Minchin, Amanda Palmer, this post-punk-alt-cabaret-freak-loving-experimental-performance- artist is revealing her secret shame, and is going to explore her morbid curiosity for writing a pop song.
