Major Lazer have made a name for themselves. Their live shows are like the ultimate rowdy frat boy house party, and their Wednesday night gig at The Enmore Theatre did not disappoint.
American DJ duo Flosstradamus opened the night and had the crowd worked into a hot pit of sweat with their dub hip hop well before the Major Lazer boys took to the decks.
“Can we turn the Enmore Theatre into a mosh pit?!” The guys spat before the heavy bass of Mosh Pit reverberated into the crowd. The Flosstradamus warning sign symbol was raised high above heads in a two hand triangular salute, while feet were thumping to the rhythm warping both the ceiling above and the floor beneath.
They whipped the crowd into a frenzy with a chant of “Major! Lazer!” then departed. With only 20 minutes till the main event, sweaty youngsters scurried outside to momentarily cool off the sticky heat from the dance floor.
The stylishly clad Major Lazer, Diplo, Walshy Fire and Jillionaire, bounced onto the stage in sleek matching suits, kicking off their set with a remixed version of Royals by Grammy-winning girl-of-the-moment, Lorde.
Their set was an amalgamation of their popular dancehall dub tracks peppered with R n B, punk and pop remixes by the likes of The Prodigy, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and House of Pain.
Lasers penetrated the crowd like gigantic glow sticks as Diplo waved their ‘free the universe’ flag above his head. The stage was a sensory overload as ‘Major Lazer’ flashed across the giant LED backdrop, streamer guns popped and CO2 cannons blasted into the air. At one point Diplo jumped in a giant zorb ball and crowd-zorbed the sticky mosh pit.
Beats like Bubble Butt, Original Don, Pon de Floor and new release Lose Yourself had the group constantly darting out from behind the decks to the front of the stage, helicoptering shirts above their heads with the crowd mimicking their every move.
“I wanna see everybody take their shirts off!” Walshy Fire bellowed, “We’re going to be naked for the rest of the show!” Sure enough, shirts flew and rained down from the balcony as elated youngsters farewelled their favourite shirts in a complete state of euphoria.
At 10:50pm a confetti gun shot above the crowd to signal their ending. As the boys walked off stage momentarily the crowd thumped for an encore with another chant of “Major! Lazer!”.
The boys bounced back on stage yelling, “Are you guys tired? You wanna go home?! Then put those fucking hands up!” With a generous three-song encore, the boys remixed Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ Can’t Hold Us before finally closing their set with their more subdued song Jessica.
There’s no denying that Major Lazer tore the roof off The Enmore Theatre on Wednesday night, the shirtless and sweaty crowd seeming almost stunned as they left. Major Lazer have a reputation for OTT productions, but their performance is an insane spectacle that has to be seen.
