Jimi Hocking & Geoff Achison Guitar Showdown! http://www.moshtix.com.au/v2/event/jimi-hocking-geoff-achison-guitar-showdown/102332?ref=RSS_rss_mallard It’s back! Two of Melbourne’s hottest guitar slingers, Jimi Hocking & Geoff Achison are bringing their celebrated Guitar Showdown show to The Spotted Mallard Friday April 27th. With Geoff's red-hot Souldiggers band (Roger McLachlan, Gerry Pantazis & Richard Tankard) Jimi & Geoff will face off on stage trading riffs and swapping licks on a variety of rockin' blues, gutsy originals and guitar classics.

Jimi has been thrilling audiences with his astonishing guitar prowess for many years both locally and internationally. He won the 2003 'International Blues Challenge' in Memphis, USA and is currently touring the country as lead guitarist with Oz rock giants The Screaming Jets. Meanwhile he maintains a busy solo career playing brilliant one-man acoustic shows and rocking up the stage with his group, the 'Blues Machine'

Geoff has been a fixture on Melbourne's blues/roots scene since playing with veteran bluesman Dutch Tilders in the 90's. After several years with Dutch he pursued a solo career overseas and quickly made his mark winning the Albert King Award in Memphis 1995. His 2017 release 'Another Mile, Another Minute' scooped the pool at the Australian Blues Music awards winning in 5 categories. Geoff's April 27th appearance at The Spotted Mallard will be his very first Australian show since returning from an extensive 35 date UK Tour.

Don't miss this show!

Steve Boyd Rum Reverie Album Launch http://www.moshtix.com.au/v2/event/steve-boyd-rum-reverie-album-launch/101184?ref=RSS_rss_mallard With a punk brain, a gospel soul, a blues heart, and hints of jazz coursing through its veins, Steve Boyd’s Rum Reverie promises to get you up out of your seats. With New Orleans swagger, a large cup of soul, a spoonful of blues, and a dash of jazz noir, Steve Boyd's Rum Reverie hoots and hollers. Imagine Tom Waits meeting Hound Dog Taylor in Bourbon St, New Orleans and you're getting close.

The sound is heartfelt and raw, the influences primal and instinctive.

Steve Boyd's Rum Reverie is essentially the brainchild of Paul Fiddles and Steve Boyd. With a wealth of creative experience, both brutal and beautiful, their respective pasts intertwine in the music of the band.

Not just collaborators but life-long friends, the project was conceived over many late nights of shared musings and quaffing of wine to a shared soundtrack of old vinyl records.

And what did they listen to? What amalgam of sounds ended up coalescing into Steve Boyd's Rum Reverie? Try The Clash, Ian Dury and The Blockheads, Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart, Louis Armstrong, Louis Prima, Miles Davis, Bette Davis, Nina Simone, Burt Bacharach, Joni Mitchell, Eartha Kitt, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra and everything in between.

The influences are primal and instinctive; perhaps not overly schooled (and nor would they want it to be) and certainly not slick. The core group of Paul on drums and Steve on guitar and vocals is augmented by upright bass and brass. The sound is heartfelt and real.

With a punk brain, a gospel soul, a blues heart and hints of jazz truckling through its veins, Steve Boyd's Rum Reverie may be something of a musical Frankenstein. In the best possible way. This is a monster, however, that promises to and does hoot, holler, growl and grind with all its might.

Their debut EP Healers and Howlers was nominated in The Age Music Victoria Music Awards 'Best Blues Album' category in 2016. The band are set to release their full length album, Hoodoo Hipshake in April 2018, following performances at 2016 Leaps and Bounds Festival, 2017 Port Fairy Folk Festival, and a residency at Melbourne's iconic Cherry Bar during 2017.

The first song released from Hoodoo Hipshake was Spencer P. Jones, a moving homage to the Australian cult icon.

As Steve Boyd explains: "During a period of self-imposed exile from the Melbourne music scene I facilitated a music/songwriting therapy group for homeless and marginalised people in inner city Melbourne for one of the renowned charity organisations. During this time I came in to contact with Spencer who had been recommended to me as a volunteer group co-facilitator.

"It was during this time that I conceived the idea for the song Spencer P. Jones which is an attempt to celebrate or honour his musical legacy, mythologize and humanise him etc. The combination of working in such a forum with something of a musical hero plus discovering and getting to know a naturally gifted, legendary, yet humble, honest, considerate and giving musician was a significant experience for myself and the group participants etc."

Spencer P Jones is just one highlight on an album of highlights. Hoodoo Hipshake is the real deal folks. Feel it now.

The Laborastory - May Edition http://www.moshtix.com.au/v2/event/the-laborastory-may-edition/102900?ref=RSS_rss_mallard The Laborastory is a science storytelling event in Melbourne that comes to tell the stories of science - the heroes, the egos, the breakthroughs and the mistakes of genius. From forgotten history and lonely laboratories, science and scientists quite literally take centre stage.

The Laborastory brings together five scientists from different fields to tell the remarkable stories of the heroes of their field. Each story is just ten short minutes. They tell the tales of the tragedies and triumphs of the men and women who made science their passion, and left legacies of groundbreaking discoveries that inspire the scientists of today.
The Laborastory was started in May 2013 by three friends who share a passion for science. Inspired by similar storytelling events around the world, they decided to start their own storytelling event in Melbourne with a science theme.

Featuring energetic and enigmatic front man Serge Brideau the band are making their first ever journey "Down Under".

These crazy musical aliens have been showering audiences with their love-bomb of psychadelico-psychotronic music for over a decade taking in numerous European tours and showcasing continuously across the length and breadth of Canada.

In a jaw-dropping performance including two side-splitting acceptance speeches, the outrageous frontman left his mark on host city Saint John In New Brunswick recently when the band took out honours for Best Rock Band and Best Group Recording of the Year at the 2017 East Coast Music Awards gala in Canada.

A new album will be launched late spring and they are presently finishing work on a rock opera which will launch in November 2018.

Les Hotesses d'Hilaire are Serge Brideau (vocal, guitar and frontman), Mico Roy (guitars), Michel Vienneau (bass), Leandre Bourgeois (keys) and Maxence Cormier (drums),

Coda Chroma tumble into the abyss with their stark new single Circles. The first taste from their forthcoming album, Circles is a striking departure from the self-titled, psychedelic pop LP they released in 2017. Circles combines ultra-minimal 808 beats, handclaps and warped, junkyard organs with one- take vocal performances. You can feel it in your guts. It's an account of world weary despair and that niggling feeling we all know: self-doubt, as the singer Kate Lucas takes us inside the fraught nature of internal monologues. Produced by Damien Charles Circles is unflinching and holds you in its grip. Station to Station- era Bowie rumblings drag you down a disused train track without a resolution.

James Seedy- Like a Townes Van Zandt residency at Berghain. Like a David Lynch discoth que. Like if Rammstein were Hank Williams. Like if the general "vibe" of Westworld was a '90s rave compilation. Like if Total Recall was also The Great Escape, and also an entire weekend at Revolver. Melbourne based musician/producer James Seedy plays both kinds of music Country and Techno.

LoVision - LoVision is the sound of fragile humanity as it is propelled forwards exponentially into the future. It is a Heiroglyph for the ongoing merger of the organic with the artificial, of love & chrome, of the blurred & blurring lines between worlds that once seemed so divided.
Through their live shows & their recorded work they attempt to create transportive hypnotic states for themselves & for the listener, captivating & entrancing, clearing out the head to make way for a more visceral, raw & emotional experience of this world that we know so well yet somehow avoid confronting.

Ms.45 -Ms.45 is the brainchild and alter ego of arcane pop chanteuse Ella Jackson. Having been described as everything from "Massive Attack meets Patti Smith" to "the goth Taylor Swift", Ms.45's set is genre-defying yet familiar, sometimes hypnotic and sometimes abrasive.

Sci Fight Science Comedy Debate: Free will ain't free http://www.moshtix.com.au/v2/event/sci-fight-science-comedy-debate-free-will-aint-free/102609?ref=RSS_rss_mallard Sci Fight is a quarterly science comedy debate held at the wonderful Spotted Mallard, with your definitely qualified hosts, Alanta Colley and Tom Lang (citation needed). This round's topic: 'Free will ain't free'.

We all possess free will. We can assess the situation, weigh up the pros, the cons, and pick the best option in any given scenario. Right?

We have the ability to use objective analysis, a critical lens, facts and evidence. Don't we? I really hope so; science is banking on it.

We're not just a seething bag of hormones, pre-programmed for self preservation, reproduction and limiting energy expenditure. I mean it's what separates us from our monkey ancestors; our higher order thinking. An aptitude for selflessness. An ability to think long term. A capacity to dream, to imagine, to create. I mean if we don't have free will, explain the Opera House. Explain the Sistine Chapel. Explain belly button rings. I mean, what purpose could they possibly serve? Why would the pre-programmed mind invent tassels?

Then again, look at what sugar does to the brain. And caffeine. And love. If our brains are so easily manipulated by a few simple molecular chains, how can we bank on it to navigate the complex constellation of decisions with some level of self awareness and clarity? Are our brains just a slip n' slide of well-worn neural pathways, doing what we're doing because that's what we did yesterday? Is there nothing separating us from our robot progeny except possession of a digestive tract?

Bring your digestive tract and your neural pathways to the Spotted Mallard May 10 for Sci Fight Science Comedy Debate: Free will ain't free. Based on the combination of excellent scientists, clever comedians and proximity to beer and burgers we predict you'll have an excellent time.

Deep Leads is about buried and hidden things. Mining the land, the body and mind. Old rivers of feeling. Poison/panacea. Extraction/preservation. Escapism/courage. Cycles of decay and return. Deep Leads is the underlying layer to their previous album Loom. Where Loom explored the basalt bed of the Merri Creek, Deep Leads heads underground and within, exploring industrial, agricultural and personal histories (Blue Lake, The Dry, Invertebrate City), heavy and precious metals (Radium Girls, Mine), internal realms of escape and quest (Poison Garden, Cyclamen, Nitrates).

Having recently been awarded a fellowship to research and compose pieces about Melbourne's waterways , you always get a history lesson with each Orbweavers show.

Folk Rock Renaissance with The Grapes & Ashley Naylor & The Triad http://www.moshtix.com.au/v2/event/folk-rock-renaissance-with-the-grapes-ashley-naylor-the-triad/103115?ref=RSS_rss_mallard An evening of 60s infused soundscapes featuring The Grapes new single release and Ashley Naylor & The Triad playing music of the Byrds. The Grapes' self-titled debut album is an indelible Australian pop classic of 1999. Sherry Rich and Ashley Naylor, two cult heroes from the country-pop and rock 'n' roll ends of Melbourne's musical underground had a chance encounter with shared roots decades deep in the beat pop innocence of mid '60s jangle and the timeless sob and sigh of the great country singer-songwriter tradition. A small but perfectly formed masterpiece was born. Sherry split to Nashville for ten years and on her return in 2013 the duo recorded a second album 'Western sun.' Reunited, The Grapes found their psychedelic-country chemistry has grown richer, darker and infinitely deeper. Joined on this night by Doug Lee Robertson on bass/vocals and Steve Pinkerton on drums/vocals this is a rare sighting of The Grapes not to be missed.

Ashley Naylor & The Triad present a live interpretation of the 1967 psych rock masterpiece by The Byrds - Younger Than Yesterday. Classic songs like 'Mr. Spaceman' and 'So You Wanna Be a Rock n roll Star' by Crosby, McGuinn and Hillman featured reverse guitar, B bender, 12 string Rickenbacker and electronic oscillators and delved into themes of extra terrestrial life, acid and metaphysicality. The Triad are Michael Barclay, Rick Plant and Matt Palmer.

Artist Bios:
Dogmatic (7:00pm)
Jarryd, or Emcee Dogmatic is a 22 year old artist born and raised in Melbourne, is a young rapper/artist, coming from a rich musical background participating in metal bands and other music before taking up the mic, check out his music influenced by old school and new school Hip Hop

Winnick (7:30pm):
With over 10 years of gigging experience... (OMG i'm old...#keepup) and supporting the likes of Ash Grunwald, Dallas Frasca and Bonjah; Winnick has become known as an unpredictable, genre bending word wizard.
"You sound like Ed Sheeran on coke...but in a good way" - Some legend punter
He's quirky to say the least and never takes himself too seriously. It's a fusion of folk, rap, roots and rock'n'roll which he backs up with his theatrical roots. Using an acoustic guitar and a ginormous collection of original songs, he likes to tailor sets on the fly, which adapt to his given audience and environment

Kat Eddy Trio: (8:30pm):
As some guy once said, "nobody puts Baby in a corner" and similarly nobody puts a singer-songwriter into a genre box. But basically, we're talking guitar-based tunes with a little jazz and soul and some occasional funk or hip hop influence thrown in, underpinning lyrical explorations of major issues like injustice, feminism, vulnerability, and coffee. Audiences most frequently comment on Kat's interesting chords, her songwriting, and her very large guitar. Performing as a trio featuring Brad Moffitt on drums and Brendan Henriques on bass, neither of whom are permitted backing vocal mics (sorry boys).

New$hoes (9:30pm):
Nemo aka NEW$HOES is a singer-songwriter from Melbourne, Australia. Moving to Melbourne in early 2015 from Brisbane, Nemo began playing shows all around Melbourne becoming known for his soulful vocals, r&b flavored rhythms and emotional lyrical content. Utilising a basic loop pedal setup for live shows, with a hip hop influenced beat boxing style along with layered harmonies NEW$HOES gives a unique performance, compared to the likes of a Chet Faker or James Blake.

Renelophus (10:30pm):
Listeners are treated to a full fruit salad of moods leaving a strange pop after-taste. Each song is entirely different to the next and are brought together with the unmistakable vocal acrobatics of the delectable duo. With overly candid lyrical content (although almost entirely politically acceptable), enjoyment is definitely the intention of the band offering boogie-worthy rhythms to bounce to. The band promises to give something out of the ordinary for a party-going audience yearning for something different.

Melbourne's Maestro of Roots Music, Andy Baylor, has brought together some of the most renowned country roots musicians and singers in the land to present SONGS FROM THE LOST HIGHWAY... the Poetry and Western of Hank Williams ...songs of life, songs of love, free-wheelin' good times, blues-filled hard times and wry hillbilly observations on life...Hank Williams invented Americana....so .....if you are sad and lonesome , got no place to go , come along now sweet people .....come and see the show

"It seems that ever since I picked up my first guitar, I've been hearing the name of Hank Williams. His songs are everywhere and he's influenced everybody. Whatever style of popular music you're into- country, blues, bluegrass, rockabilly, rock, pop, folk and gospel- somewhere in the back of it all sits Hank Williams with his crackling' voice and his guitar a' strummin'.

At once, traditional and completely modern, Hank sings of a time in the American South when the war was over and the new world was wide open. You could do anything, go anywhere and be anyone. But this new freedom brought with it a whole lot of heartaches and disillusionment. The best songs of Hank Williams not only chronicle the emotional landscape of that era but, like other great works of art, stand outside time and genre; they tell us who we are and touch our souls.

Andy Baylor has been interpreting the music of Hank Williams since the heady days of '70's Melbourne when hip hillbilly country was heard a' ringin' down the streets of old Fitzroy and Carlton. With The Dancehall Racketeers, he toured the backblocks and back-roads of Australia spreading the sounds of Hillbilly Swing, Bob Wills and country fiddle; with his famous Cajun Combo, he single-handedly introduced a Cajun/ Australian hybrid form of bar-room music which re-interpreted Hank's most famous songs and demonstrated stylistic connections between Hank Williams' melodies and traditional Cajun music along the way; Over the last few decades he has recorded over a dozen independent CD's which offer a broad range of styles and he has shared the stage with everybody from the world's biggest rock stars to the most humble country busker.
