Widely acknowledged as Australia's leading Jazz Orchestra, The Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra's members have featured heavily in Australia's top jazz prizes over the last decade. Musically this ensemble represents many of the finest young improvisers Australia has to offer, and features original music from Sydney's most dynamic and creative large ensemble composers, and improvising talent all packaged into one exciting super-ensemble.

The music of the Mothership, under the artistic direction of David Theak, can best be defined as exciting, dynamic and highly original. The members of the Orchestra are committed to re-defining the standard of Jazz Orchestral music within Australia, presenting National Tours, CD releases and the running of an annual Big Band Composition Competition, with a $3,500 cash prize on offer to Australia's finest young composers, this year running in conjunction with the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz.

This year sees the Orchestra collaborating with US jazz legend Charles Tolliver. Former Downbeat Poll winner, Grammy nominee and a veteran performer with groundbreaking ensembles such as Art Blakey's jazz messengers, Sonny Rollins, Roy Haynes, Andrew Hill, and the Horace Silver Group, Tolliver is also a highly respected and extremely inventive large ensemble composer who makes his Australian debut at the helm of the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra.
