Event Details

Soulfest International in association with Channel [V], are thrilled to announce one of the most exciting artists of 2015 - the Jazz giant, composer and band leader, Kamasi Washington, performing one exclusive side show at The Basement, on Thursday 22nd October. Sydney Morning Herald recently gave Kamasi Washington’s album “The Epic” a 5 star review stating “Let’s cut to the chase, these three CD’s likely represent the most essential music purchase of the year”. This will be the only chance to see this incredible new jazz performer up close and personal.

Hailing from Los Angeles, the pianist, drummer and saxophonist has been headlining the USA's most coveted Jazz institutions for many years. Besides his dynamic live performances, Kamasi spends his time working on albums and movie scores having played his magic on albums from artists including Flying Lotus (who refers to Kamasi's music as West Coast Spiritual), Lauryn Hill and Kendrick Lamar's masterpiece "To Pimp A Butterfly". He has also toured extensively with Snoop Dogg, Raphael Saadiq, Chaka Khan and many more.

His latest album "The Epic" is a triple disc masterpiece that is both written and conducted by Washington and fuses elements of jazz, soul, classical, hip-hop and even gospel. The album is 172-minute, three volume set that includes a 32-piece orchestra, a 20-person choir, and 17 songs overlaid with a compositional score written by Washington. Pulsing underneath is an otherworldly ten-piece band, each member of which is individually regarded as among the best young musicians on the planet - including bassist Thundercat, and his brother, drummer Ronald Bruner Jr., bassist (yes, there are two) Miles Mosley, drummer Tony Austin, keyboard player Brandon Coleman, pianist Cameron Graves, and trombonist Ryan Porter. Patrice Quinn's ethereal vocals round out the ensemble.

"These young guys remind me of why I love music". COMMON

"He just plays the craziest shit, man. I mean, everything - the past, present, the future". FLYING LOTUS

This is your only chance to see Kamasi Washington up close and personal.
